OUR HERITAGE
WHERE WE STARTED
Have we chosen them, or have they chosen us as their guardians? Somewhere deep in our hearts, we know.
WHERE WE STARTED
Have we chosen them, or have they chosen us as their guardians? Somewhere deep in our hearts, we know.
The story of our family unfolds like a strand of pearls, unraveling from generation to generation. As natural pearl merchants, our lives are intricately woven with the pearls and the miraculous artistic work of nature. We dedicate our lives to crafting pearl jewelry, remaining faithful, devoted, and in love.
1ST GENERATION
1850
In the 1850s, Hussain bin Salman bin Mattar embarked on a fateful journey, turning from the trade of palm dates and timber toward the allure of natural pearls. In this decisive moment, he became the original custodian of our family's pearling heritage. His sons, Salman and Mohammed, inherited not just their father’s flourishing enterprise, but the profound knowledge and reverence for the sea’s treasures. Thus, they laid the foundation of a legacy that continues to resonate across generations.
2nd Generation
1901
Salman bin Hussain bin Mattar swiftly distinguished himself as a master in the art of natural pearls, earning reverence as one of the most esteemed traders of his era. His devotion to the craft transcended mere commerce, forging profound connections with patrons and merchants from distant shores. Through his passion, the family’s name became synonymous with excellence, and their influence extended far beyond their homeland, enriching both their legacy and the world of pearls.
3RD GENERATION
1940
In the wake of their father and grandfather, the three sons of Salman bin Hussain bin Mattar—Ebrahim, Ahmed, and Abdulaziz—embraced the noble family tradition of pearl trading. Yet, the winds of destiny called Abdulaziz to a different course, leading him away from the ancestral craft. In his departure, the legacy of pearls rested with his brothers, who faithfully continued the time-honored pursuit, ensuring the heritage endured through the hands that remained.
4th Generation
1960
The discovery of oil transformed the world of natural pearls, drawing many toward new horizons. Yet, in the midst of this change, the sons of Ebrahim remained steadfast in they're calling. Khalifa, shining with unwavering passion, continued his journey amidst the shifting tides. He gathered the rarest pearls, earning himself the cherished title of "The Collector of the Jiwan." His legacy shone brightly until his quiet departure in 1997, leaving behind a collection as timeless and enduring as the sea.
5th Generation
1990
After the passing of Khalifa bin Ebrahim bin Mattar, his only son, Ebrahim, stood resolute in his commitment to honor the family legacy. The weight of his inheritance called him away from the steady path of his government position and into the timeless embrace of the pearl trade. In 1998, driven by a deep sense of duty and passion, he established an office dedicated to the art of pearls. It quickly became a gathering place where sailors and divers from near and far would bring their ocean’s harvest, seeking not only to sell their treasures but to immerse themselves in the rich traditions of pearl trading. Ebrahim’s knowledge and dedication transformed this modest office into a beacon of the pearling world—a place where the wisdom of the past was shared, and the future of the trade was shaped by those who walked through its doors. Through his unwavering efforts, the family’s legacy continued to thrive, and the luminous beauty of pearls remained at the heart of their story.
6th Generation
2000s
In 2002, a new era dawned as Talal joined his father Ebrahim in the pearl trade. With a shared vision, they embarked on expanding their horizons, introducing exquisite pearl jewelry to their previously exclusive range of wholesale loose pearls and necklaces. This bold move culminated in September 2004 with the grand opening of Mattar Jewelers: the House of Natural Pearls, the retail division of the enterprise.
Their success set the stage for a significant transformation within the business. For 150 years, men were the masters of our pearls until the time arrived for women to contribute their invaluable expertise. Reem led the way, followed by Faten and Lubna. Each brought a unique touch to the enterprise, ensuring that the family’s tradition not only continued but evolved. United in their commitment, they are dedicated to guiding the legacy into the hands of the seventh generation, preserving the luminous heritage of the pearls for future generations.
